Lucky sods

This morning I looked out and saw a yacht sailing past on an ocean that glistened in the morning sun.

“Lucky sod,” I thought.

“Imagine spending today mucking about in a boat!”

And then I caught myself.

Here I was standing in my kitchen next to the Atlantic coast of France, with a coffee and fresh baguette, watching the ocean as I get ready to work in my own business on things I love doing.

How many people would think “Lucky sod” if they could see me?

And probably the chain goes on with each person’s situation being longed for by others.

As human beings — and especially entrepreneurs — we’re always looking at the next step up.

Where we want to get to.

What we want to achieve.

How things will be different.

Pushing ourselves, for more more more.

But too often we measure ourselves against what we see others having achieved.

Seeing people with certain size agencies, or winning certain clients, being lauded at conferences, exiting, etc etc.

We don’t spend enough time noticing what we’ve already achieved ourselves, how far we’ve come — and then appreciating it.

Look at where you’ve got to today.

Your agency, the work it does, the impact it has.

What you’ve built and the lifestyle it gives you compared with where you were ten, twenty years ago.

What would the you-from-back-then admire about your life now?

Recognise how well you’ve done — and what a lucky sod you are.

Then let it be your own track record of personal achievement that spurs you on, rather than measuring yourself by others.
